It’s Father’s Day… about 10 years ago I met a boy. He was 3. Blond hair, blue eyes full of joy. I rescued him from an impossible situation. His mother and father were drug addicts. They were the dangerous kind. They had robbed a fast food restaurant with their child in the back seat of the car. He was months old. When I was told this story I became enraged. How could any parent put their child in such danger? Little did I know this child had been to more crack houses in the first few months of his life than any of us ever will. So when I was introduced to the parents we will just say it was interesting. Dad knew immediately I was going to be new dad so he bounced. Mom had just gotten out of prison. She lived with me for a brief period of time. She’s clean and off drugs because I told her if she ever put him at risk like that again I would kill her. She believed me and has been opiate free for almost a decade now. I have no regrets. My kid is a gift to the world and worth protecting. He’s better than me in every way. He is kind and thoughtful. Unbreakable in spirit. He’s more mature than me and one of my best teachers. He’s the one thing I didn’t fuck up. So instead of celebrating Father’s Day for myself I’ll be celebrating the boy nobody wanted and my own father. Every day is Father’s Day when you have the right people in your life.
